Cherie Gil, known as the country's "La Primera Contravida," passed away last August 5 at the age of 59.
Gil's death was confirmed to GMA News by her nephew, actor Sid Lucero. The actress's long-time friend and talent manager, Annabelle Rama, also disclosed the news through her own Twitter and Instagram account.
Cherie was born into a showbiz clan and had an early start in the industry at only nine years old. Since then, she has appeared in over 100 films such as Manila by Night (1980), Oro, Plata, Mata (1982), and Bituing Walang Ningning (1985). The latter of which she will be known for her iconic delivery of the line "you're nothing but a second-rate, trying hard copycat!"
In 1994, she took a break from acting to focus on her family. She came back in 2001 with Sugatang Puso where she received the Best Supporting Actress award at the Metro Manila Film Festival.
Her brief appearance in the movie Citizen Jake (2018) also warranted her her first Gawad Urian award.
During the pandemic, she became an acting mentor for aspiring and experienced actors alike. Last February, she announced that she moved to New York to "start a new chapter" with her kids.
Cherie's friends from the industry expressed their grief and prayers for her through social media posts.
On Saturday morning, Sharon Cuneta posted a photo on Instagram where she's seen holding Cherie's hand.
Vilma Santos posted a throwback photo of her with the actress, together with the words "Rest in peace, my friend. We love you, Ms. Cherie."
MEGA Magazine disclosed that Cherie Gil passed away at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
