NE 3rd dist flood control projects finished
By J.Lo
"Erosion of parts of Sierra Madre mountain range brings flash floods to Nueva Ecija during natural calamities when rivers overflow, forcing city and town residents to evacuate to safer ground," Nueva Ecija Third District Rep. Rosanna "Ria" Vergara said Second Engineering District of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) covering 3rd congressional district of Nueva Ecija has announced completion of five flood-control projects in the province that are expected to mitigate flooding in big rice producer in Region 3 (Central Luzon).
The push and initiative of Vergara and regional office of DPWH office in Nueva Ecija, according to Second District Engineer Elpidio Trinidad, made realization of the projects possible.
The third congressional district is composed of the towns of Bongabon, Gabaldon, Laur, Natividad and Santa Rosa, and the cities of Cabanatuan and Palayan, which in the past were all isolated by flash floods.
Meanwhile, desilting and dredging are underway in other areas in the third district to also mitigate flooding.
The unwanted water, mainly from Bongabon, Gabaldon and Laur, as well as town of Rizal, finds its way to Pampanga river, the second-largest in Luzon, next to the Cagayan River.
The Pampanga River basin is estimated to have total area of 420,000 hectares covering two cities and Science City of Munoz and 25 municipalities in the provinces of Nueva Ecija, Bulacan and Pampanga.
The completed flood-control projects, Trinidad said, were funded under general appropriation acts of 2020 and 2021.
In his report to DPWH Region 3 Director Roseller Tolentino, he stressed, two completed projects were P80.53-million project at Coronel River in Gabaldon and P90-million project along Pampanga River.
Other priority flood-control projects are ongoing at Barangay Tugatug and Barangay Ariendo, both in Bongabon.
A similar project, desilting of river, is also ongoing at Dupinga River in Gabaldon.
