Capital punishment, don't deter crime

By Nidz Godino

"We need  more efficient criminal justice system, where fiscal is rendering correct opinions on cases filed before them, judges should likewise behave in that manner, and all the way up to Supreme Court,"

Former deputy speaker and Buhay party-list chairman Jose "Lito" Atienza Jr. said death penalty will never be  deterrent to crime, adding that reforming justice system is  better strategy to fight criminality

The lawmaker stressed reintroducing  death penalty without addressing  primary issue  law enforcement is ineffective will only make matters worse.

"Violence begets more violence… culture of violence will only get worse if we do that," Atienza said in response to Sen. Ronald dela Rosa's statement that he will push for  return of  death penalty.

"This is why I beg to disagree with Senator dela Rosa…he is reacting like  typical law enforcer today," he added.

Dela Rosa, chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs, has reaffirmed his commitment to bring back capital punishment to stem rise of narcotics trafficking.

"Even though I am no longer an incumbent congressman, having represented  Buhay party-list during the last three Congresses and having reached  full three terms allowed under the law, I will not shy away from discussions on this very basic and important issue in the lives of Filipinos," Atienza said.

For Atienza previous administration's all-out war on drugs that claimed so many lives ended up   failure.

"Corruption in our law enforcement and criminal justice systems should be stopped…if we want real change, we should start with ourselves…let's take  election system very seriously and elect  correct officials," he added.

"The death penalty is an easy way out for criminals…life imprisonment is more fitting punishment for them…forgive me if I have to react and immediately disagree with those who are shouting death penalty is the solution... this will not solve the problem," Atienza concluded.
