Jose Rizal University (JRU) sanctioned an indefinite suspension on basketball player John Amores for the remainder of NCAA Season 98. Amores has recently gone viral for assaulting several members of the College of St. Benilde (CSB) during their recent game at the FilOil EcoOil Centre.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association also slapped an indefinite ban against the 6-foot-2 player. The NCAA's statement said that, "Violence has no place in the NCAA. The ManCom condemns and will not tolerate any acts of violence that will endanger our athletes, participants, official supporters, and the public."
Paul Supan of JRU, an NCAA Management Committee member, issued a statement regarding the unbecoming incident.
The statement read, "Jose Rizal University, as one of the oldest members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, has always supported the objectives of the association to promote sportsmanship, camaraderie, and good values among students of the member schools. In line with this mission, the university does not condone violence in any form."
Amores is also prohibited from participating in team practices. Supan also relayed that the university will be conducting its own internal investigation on the incident. JRU also promises total cooperation with the NCAA's inquiry.
Supan's statement closed with an apology regarding the player's behavior. "We apologize to the whole basketball community, particularly to our NCAA family for this incident. Violence has no part in the sport of basketball, and as a member of the NCAA, we shall continue to uphold the highest ideals of collegiate athletic competitions."
