New modern airport seen in Sulu

"It is pragmatic move due to its location and proximity to other municipalities, being at center of Sulu mainland," Sulu Gov. Sakur said new and modern airport may soon rise in Sulu could further boost trade, commerce and tourism on the island.
Airport is also seen to make southern province major gateway to Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).
Regional government, through Bangsamoro Planning and Development Authority (BPDA), has approved feasibility study for proposed airport that straddles Talipao and Maimbung municipalities, Tan said.
Tan said BPDA has already approved funding for feasibility study for new airport.
Members of BPDA were recently in Sulu to conduct preliminary aerial survey of proposed airport site. Officials, led by BPDA Director Kadil Sulaik Jr., included engineers Esmael Usop and Bernie Taula; Yasher Arafat Usman, project assistant; and planning officer Edenson Magiting.
They were also joined by engineers Bertrand Chio, head of Provincial Planning and Development Office, and his assistant Ben Akalal; Abdurasad Baih, provincial engineer; and engineer Aldrin Juljani, assistant provincial assessor.
Sulaik said BPDA would also provide assistance in power generation requirements of Sulu.
"Provide us with projected yearly power requirements for our reference so we can provide necessary assistance," Sulaik told Tan.
Tan thanked regional government and BPDA for their infrastructure support. Currently, capital town of Jolo hosts lone airport in the province, which is also being used by military.
