MANILA, Philippines — LTFRB Chairman Atty. Teofilo Guadiz III announced today that the June 30 PUJ franchise consolidation deadline has now been moved to December 31, 2023.
In effect, all traditional jeepney franchises have been extended till the end of the year.
Guadiz maintains that the decision to extend the June 30 deadline was not influenced by the upcoming Tigil Pasada nationwide. Thus, The it adheres to the directive made by DOTr Sec. Jaime Bautista as well as a statement from President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.
The chief executive earlier vowed that he will study the rising calls to delay the scheduled phaseout of traditional jeepneys by June 30, but he admitted that the PUV modernization program needs to be implemented "in a different way."
"We have to implement it in a different way. 'Yung modernization siguro, 'yung (on the implementation of the modernization program), we have to look properly at what the real timetable is for the introduction of electric vehicles, kung talagang kailan, kung puwede na ngayon."
PRESIDENT FERDINAND "BONG BONG" MARCOS JR.
(We have to implement it in a different way. We have to look properly at what the real timetable is for the introduction of electric vehicles if when exactly, and if it is possible now.)
"Kailangan pag-aralan natin ang timetable, hindi ganoon kasimple. Ito'y nakita namin sa pag-uusap natin sa mga car manufacturers, na sinasabi nila, kasi nage-encourage tayo electric vehicles. Sabi nila puwede tayong gumawa ng electric vehicles pero aayusin niyo muna 'yung source of power," Marcos added.
(We have to review the timetable. It's not that simple. Car manufacturers are saying that we are encouraging electric vehicles, but we still need to fix our source of power)
Marcos also affirmed that he would consider the condition of the traditional jeepneys.
"At the same time, to keep the vehicles safe, sa aking palagay dapat ang puwedeng gawin ay inspeksyunin 'yung mga vehicles kahit luma. May luma naman na maganda pa rin. May luma naman na puwede pang gamitin."
(At the same time, to keep the vehicles safe, in my opinion, what should be done is to inspect the vehicles, even if they are old. There are old ones that are still good. There are old ones that can still be used.
