Ex-PDU30 not keen on becoming anti-drug czar
By Nidz Godino
Former President Rodrigo Duterte
"Mukhang hindi na rin tama , Pastor, because there is the President duly elected and it is his duty to enforce law and solve crimes," former President Rodrigo Duterte thumbed down calls for him to become anti-drug czar under current administration, saying it is now duty of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. to address illegal drug problem in the country.
Duterte, who has been facing an International Criminal Court (ICC) investigation because of his bloody war on drugs during his term as president, was asked if he would consider idea of possibly working for Marcos administration as an anti-drug czar.
He stressed addressing drug issue is "matter of leadership," therefore FMJ should be given leeway to do so in a year.
"Let us give Marcos greatest elbow room leeway to do his job in just one year…and in fairness do'n sa mga pulis, 'yan ang problema ..the last time I said it, it's matter of leadership," former president said.
It was Senator Bong Go, during Senate Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs hearing on P6.7 billion shabu haul in Manila on May 23, floated idea and asked Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Benjamin Acorda if he thought Duterte would be helpful if ever he would take such post. In response, Acorda would support any step that would help in government's campaign against illegal drugs.
Senator Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa, meanwhile, also backed call, saying it will bring back fear to policemen and criminal syndicates involved in illegal drug trade.
Dela Rosa served as chief PNP during Duterte administration.
In March, ICC's Appeals Chamber rejected Philippine government's bid for suspension of ICC prosecutor's investigation into killings in war on drugs.
With this, FMJ said Philippines is disengaging from ICC.
Solicitor General Menardo Guevarra in April said Philippines will still pursue its appeal questioning ICC's jurisdiction and authority to investigate killings during Duterte's drug war.
Government records showed at least 6,000 drug suspects were killed in police operations from June 2016 until November 2021. Several human rights groups, on the other hand, claimed actual death toll may be up to 30,000.
Dela Rosa expressed support for Senator Bong Go's proposal to appoint ex-President Rodrigo Duterte as anti-drug czar, saying this will bring back fear to cops and syndicates involved in illegal drug trade.
"Ako, personally, maganda sana kasi babalik ang takot ng mga drug syndicate, particularly 'yung mga pulis na involved,'yung mga ninja cops…matatakot at matatakot talaga 'yan," said Dela Rosa.
While the suggestion is good, Dela Rosa said it will still depend on Malacañang if they will offer post to Duterte and if the former President will accept it.
"Halimbawa nabo-bore na siya sa buhay niya sa Davao ngayonga relaxing na masyado, tatanggapin niya kung i-ooffer," Dela Rosa said.
Go raised question after expressing concern that efforts of Duterte administration would be put to waste, considering that issue that is being investigated was the alleged involvement of some cops in P6.7 billion confiscated drugs.
In October 2022, now-dismissed Police Master Sergeant Rodolfo Mayo Jr. was arrested after authorities confiscated around 990-kilogram of shabu following series of anti-drug operations in Manila.
Mayo is an intelligence officer for PDEG, based on police records.
Police officers allegedly pilfered around 42 kilos of shabu from illegal drugs seized from Mayo.
Due to alleged cover-up of incident, criminal and administrative charges were recommended against 49 PNP officials and personnel.
