Signal warning lifted as Betty weakens further- PAGASA
By J.Lo
Uyugan, Batanes
"'Yan ay storm surge siguro three to four meters po ang lakas no'n…kung mayroong magbibigay sa atin ng pondo kung matutulungan tayo ng ating congressman o si governor na marepair po yung seawall na yun," Uyugan , Batanes Mayor Jonathan Nanud is asking for help as Betty hit his town.
State weather bureau PAGASA has lifted Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal warning over the country as Severe Tropical Storm Betty continued to weaken.
PAGASA said Betty, former super typhoon with an international name of Mawar, is expected to exit Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
As of 10 in the morning Betty was located at 570 kilometers northeast of Itbayat, Batanes packing maximum sustained winds of 100 kilometers per hour (km/h), gustiness of up to 125 km/h, and central pressure of 980 hPa.
Betty's strong to storm-force winds extend outwards up to 660 km from center. The cyclone was moving north northeastward at 10 km/h.
Southwest Monsoon enhanced by Betty brought occasional to frequent wind gusts over northern Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, CALABARZON, Bicol Region, MIMAROPA, Western Visayas, Northern Samar and northern portion of Samar.
PAGASA warned of possible flooding and rain-induced landslides especially in areas prone to such hazards and those areas with considerable amounts of rainfall for past several days.
Due to Betty and Southwest Monsoon, marine gale warning is still in effect over northern seaboards of Northern Luzon, eastern seaboard of Luzon, and western seaboard of Southern Luzon, PAGASA said.
Betty is expected to gradually accelerate northward or north northeastward until turning northeastward or east northeastward over waters near Ryukyu Islands in Japan.
Huge waves spurred by typhoon Betty proved too strong for breakwater in Barangay Itbud in Uyugan town, Batanes as brick barrier supposed to protect coastal community was shattered to pieces.
Seawall in Diura fishing village in town of Mahatao was also damaged due to typhoon.
"Hindi po kami hardly hit…gilid-gilid lang ang tumama po sa amin ditto..kaya nagpapasalamat ako sa Diyos at di po naging supertyphoon at typhoon lang po," Batanes Governor Marilou Cayco said.
Earlier today, coastal waves remained strong and Coast Guard Batanes Station personnel patrolled around beach. Several individuals were warned after being caught trying to find cellphone signals in the area.
Coast Guard also patrolled boat shelters in Mahatao and said there was no reported damage on boats used to transport tourists to Itbayat.
"Four days to five days sir…oobserbahan muna namin sir…bago kami maglabas ng abiso sir na lifted na po yung no sail policy," Coast Guard Deputy Commander James Guerrero said.
Meanwhile, tourists have started doing activities anew with weather gradually improving in Batanes.
Basco Airport will be reopened for scheduled flights to Manila.
Some roads in Benguet were temporarily impassable due to a landslide after province experienced heavy rains due to Typhoon Betty.
Pieces of rock fell off mountains in Governor Bado Dangwa National Road in Kapangan, Benguet.
Benguet's Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) conducted clearing operations with Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) as well as other areas.
"May mga landslide na nangyari doon sa ganitong landslide…mayroon din sa Lacamen Road…ito 'yung connecting ng municipalities ng Tublay at Bokod…may nahulog na malalaking bato," said Abner Lawangen, Benguet PDRRMO Officer.
Meanwhile, due to continuous rain, water level of some river systems in the province swelled, including Balili River in La Trinidad.
