Pageant format revealed in Miss International 2023
By Cynthia Montojo
"This is it! Three months before arrival," in social media post earlier this month, Miss International spokesperson Stephen Diaz wrote visa invitations for Miss International 2023 delegates are now being sent one by one.
Eliminations will follow this format: from more than 80 aspirants, field will be narrowed down to Final 15. From this number will emerge Top 7. Semifinalists will do athletic wear or swimsuit while Top 7 will do speech round and final look in their evening gowns.
This year's Miss International winner, according to organization in social media post, will be evaluated based on their attitude, punctuality, beauty of face, body proportion, intelligence and social contributions. Preliminary judging will strictly be for body proportions and skin quality. Skin color is irrelevant.
While past winners have mostly been women of fair complexion, organization is now ready to embrace idea of having winner of color. This bodes well for countries who have been lobbying for their dark-skinned national winners to receive International crown.
Binibining Pilipinas International 2022 Nicole Borromeo will be representing Philippines in the Tokyo finals this year, while recently-crowned national winner Angelica Lopez will compete in next year's edition.
This early, four countries have shown interest in hosting 2024 edition of Miss International. When one of them gets nod from organization, pageant will take place outside of Japan next year. Should that push through, it would create new chapter in pageant's history.
2023 Miss International coronation night will unfold at Yoyogi Gymnasium No. 2 in Shibuya, Tokyo, on October 26,2023. Reigning queen Jasmin Selberg of Germany will crown her successor at culmination of pageant rites.
Mayuko Hanawa was proclaimed Miss Supranational Japan 2022, besting 17 other aspirants for the title.
She is believed to be first half-Pinay to win title in any of Japan's major pageants. After completing her Early Childhood Education degree, she now works as kindergarten teacher.
"As an educator, I would like to understand different cultures, aim for peace and co-existence between nations, and build global friendships…for that reason, I want to stay close to hearts of children who will lead world in the future," enthused 24-year-old educator.
Mayuko is Rotary Act volunteer and has been part of From Ground Up CSI Project which had been doing many feeding programs in the Philippines.
As singer, she has raised thousands of dollars for Ukrainian refugees in Poland through charity concert she organized with fellow Miss Supranational Japan contestants, and her sister who's also beauty queen like her.
"Currently, world faces many problems…for example, conflicts in Europe and other parts of the world, environmental problems such as climate change and global warming, and racial discrimination," she remarked.
She is in shortlist for Best in Talent challenge at this year's Miss Supranational search. She will pit her talents and skill with delegates from Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Iceland, Korea, and The Bahamas. Last year, it was Miss Supranational Philippines Allison Black who won this challenge with solo ballet piece.
Mayuko is Japan's official delegate to 14th Miss Supranational pageant that's slated to unfold on July 14 (July 15 in Manila) at Strzelecki Park, Nowy Sacz in Poland's Malopolska region. She'll be competing with 67 other international delegates, including Miss Supranational Philippines 2023 Pauline Amelinckx.
