Navotas ice plant closed for ammonia leak

"As long as facility does not comply with requirements set by city hall and BFP, it will remain closed," Navotas City's disaster risk reduction and management office head Von Villanueva said twelve workers were evacuated from ice plant in Navotas City following ammonia leak before dawn Wednesday.
According to employees, leak originated from compressor room of ice plant.
Bureau of Fire Protection responded to incident and immediately closed valve to stop leak.
Due to strong and harmful odor emanating from ammonia leak, also spilled onto roadside, authorities closed affected road for safety reasons.
Villanueva ordered closure of 168 Tube Ice Cold Storage facility while investigation is ongoing.
He said strict inspections and safety protocols would be enforced in all 26 cold storage facilities in Navotas.
On June 20, ammonia leak caused fire at Icy Point Cold Storage facility in Barangay NBBS. One person died and 23 others were hospitalized due to incident.
