OrMin lifts fishing ban
By J.Lo
"Today, we declare fishing is now open, and activities along all coastlines of Oriental Mindoro!" Oriental Mindoro, Gov. Humerlito "Bonz" Dolor said in statement on Facebook fishers can now resume their fishing activities in all parts of Oriental Mindoro, Dolor said five months after MT Princess Empress sank and leaked oil into sea.
Town of Pola, Oriental Mindoro, was last in the province to have fishing ban, lifted Thursday. Swimming in waters of Pola is still not permitted, as oil is still present, according to Pola Mayor Jennifer Cruz.
Based on latest data by Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), oil and grease levels in waters of Pola "are within Class SC standard" and free of "PAH (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) from demersal and pelagic species," Dolor said, which makes waters safe for fishing.
Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) announced in May all oil spilled from tanker had been fully extracted. But Cruz said in press conference this week does not signal end of oil spill crisis in town.
"The real situation is we still have lot to clean up… fight is not over until there is no justice for victims of oil spill, even oil residues on the beach disappear after five or six years, but there is no compensation for the people, means fight is not over," Cruz c oncluded.
