Ph, US expected jt patrols in WPS by year-end — NSC
By Nidz Godino
"May mga logistical issues pa na nireresolve…may mga ina-iron out pang mga issues but I don't think these are insurmountable," National Security Council (NSC).
Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya said national summit Philippines is set to conduct joint patrol operations with United States before end of 2023.
Malaya said t some logistical issues are still being addressed but he is optimistic they can overcome challenges.
When asked about commencement date of joint patrols in West Philippine Sea, Malaya replied, "I would think before end of the year."
During summit, official from Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) mentioned possibility of discovering " new Malampaya" in West Philippine Sea.
"We would like to push for creation of West Philippine Sea authority," said BFAR Fisheries Resource Management Division Chief Noemi Lanzuela.
She hightlighted importance of accelerating exploration, development, and utilization of energy resources in West Philippine Sea to secure country's energy needs and contribute to achieving carbon neutrality.
Malampaya gas field, once hailed as country's "biggest" commercial gas discovery, has been source of 20% of Filipino's energy needs until last year. It is projected to be fully depleted by 2027.
Malaya explained pursuit of interests in West Philippine Sea was not about challenging China, but rather focused on Philippines and its people benefiting from region.
"We are doing this because we want Philippines and Filipino people to benefit from West Philippine Sea," NSC official said.
In February, US navy chief said they are committed to conducting joint maritime patrols with Philippines in disputed South China Sea, as part of US efforts to strengthen military alliances across region and beyond.
Former president Rodrigo Duterte showed preference for China over Philippines' former colonial master, but new administration under Ferdinand Marcos Jr. appears to take different approach.
China has asserted sovereignty over almost entire South China Sea, through which trillions of dollars in trade passes annually. It continues to ignore international court ruling China's claims have no legal basis.
