Save sunset, solons seek reclamation review
By Nidz Godino
"I remember as child, we would go to Dewey Boulevard , old name of Roxas Boulevard to smell sea breeze," Sen. JV Ejercito said senators are calling for suspension of reclamation projects in Manila Bay, citing their adverse impact on environment, including spoiling view of famed Manila Bay sunset.
Secretary Ma. Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga of Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) announced formation of team to review all ongoing reclamation projects for their impact on environment.
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla is also pushing for review of all contracts for reclamation projects in Manila, saying awarding of reclamation contracts by Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA) was "rushed" and that no public hearing was held.
Ejercito expressed fears famous Manila Bay sunset would soon be gone as he called for review of impact of reclamation projects on environment.
Ejercito had fond childhood memories of feeling sea breeze and watching sunset in Manila Bay along Roxas Boulevard.
"Dati, nagpapahangin tayo sa Manila Bay…ngayon, nagpapabuhangin na tayo," he stressed, playing on Filipino words for breeze and sand.
He urged authorities to review reclamation projects in Manila Bay, if allowed to continue could obstruct view of sunset and worsen flooding in metropolis.
"I will miss charm of Manila Bay…time will come when we won't be seeing sunset anymore," Ejercito said.
Sen. Cynthia Villar has also voiced opposition to projects, saying it could worsen flooding in Las Piñas and threaten Las Piñas-Parañaque wetland park.
She thanked DENR for looking into environmental consequences of reclaiming land, as she called for review of approved projects despite Supreme Court mandamus order to rehabilitate historic bay.
" Manila Bay is ours, owned by government and people... why should private sector benefit from it…they should halt construction and determine first permanent damage it could inflict on Metro Manila," Villar said.
"I think government is serious about it now because of several complaints," Villar added, citing concern raised by US embassy in Manila, earlier said joint venture project involves subsidiary of Chinese state firm blacklisted by Washington for its role in building militarized artificial islands in South China Sea.
