When I was younger, I remember my grandmother who used to maintain the garden in our front yard. Every morning, she would water the plants, trim the overgrowths, remove the weeds, and pluck the drying leaves. Sometimes, she would loosen the soil and repot other plants. By simply watching her do all these on a regular basis, I realized how tedious the process of gardening is.
On a similar note, as Christians, we must take care of the 'garden of our souls'. Yes, the Lord has generously sown His word unto us, but we must also do our part. We must make sure that the soil where God planted the seed of His Word is fertile and cultivated enough. We also must constantly water it from the wellspring of the Church's Sacraments, fertilize it through prayer, and be open to the pruning works of the Holy Spirit. Only by subjecting ourselves to these can the seed grow into a strong tree that could bear much fruit at the proper season.
