2023 is coming to a close. But before we bid goodbye to this year, here is a look back at what happened in the world of Philippine Radio. We will discuss the Top 10 radio-related events in the country.
Last June 30, after 3 years off the air, traces of 630 AM returned in a new form as Radyo 630 with the slogan Para sa Mamamayan. This time, it is a joint venture of PCMC and ABSCBN under Media Serbisyo Corporation. Coinciding the soft launch on that date is the relaunch of TeleRadyo as TeleRadyo Serbisyo. It was officially launched on July 17 with the debut of its afternoon and evening programs.
A month prior to its return, ABSCBN entered a joint venture agreement with Prime Media to produce and supply content.
Last June 30, after 3 and a half years on the air, Q Radio went off the air due to financial losses brought by the pandemic. Signs of Q Radio's slow death started showing last May when Brigada News FM Cebu took over the operations of 90.7 FM.
Early in June, 5K Broadcasting took over the operations of 99.1 FM in Bacolod.
A couple of weeks prior, Horizon of the Sun Communications announced online regarding Q Radio bidding goodbye. This ended the speculation that lasted for a few weeks regarding the fate of Q radio nationwide.
3. Brigada's Mega Invasion
Last May, 93.1 Brigada News FM Cebu took over the operations of 90.7 FM. As part of its transition, 90.7 FM simulcasted 93.1 FM during times where Q Radio is either automated or off the air. On June 18, Brigada began its broadcast on 90.7 FM full-time. Meanwhile, 93.1 FM retained its simulcast until it went off the air on August 14.
Last July 1, after 9 years in Batangas, 104.7 Brigada News FM Mega Manila took over the operations of 105.1 FM in Manila, with the Baguio and Davao stations serving as its repeaters. Meanwhile, Brigada in Batangas was relaunched on August 9 with originating programming. With an originating station in Baguio on the works, the transfer of 91.5 Brigada News FM Davao to 93.1 remains to be seen.
4. Radyo5 Gets True
Last March 8, Radyo5 92.3 changed its sub-brand to True FM with the slogan Dito Tayo sa Totoo. The word "True" also serves as an acronym for the station's principles: Truth in journalism, Real people and stories, Unwavering commitment to public service, and Entertainment. Along the rebrand is the launch of a few new programs, including music blocks for the entire Sunday.
5. RP3
Last April 10, DZRM Radyo Manasin rebranded as Radyo Pilipinas 3. It will serve as a radio station for emergency and disaster preparedness. While it is currently on test broadcast, it airs a simulcast of Radyo Pilipinas' Home Eco Nanay.
Topics 6 to 9 will feature provincial networks.
6. Coming Home to DWIZ
Last January 30, Home Radio's provincial stations were relaunched under the DWIZ network, collectively known as DWIZ News FM. Years prior, they simulcasted DWIZ's morning show Karambola and each of the stations carried local programming in the morning.
7. Sweet Change for K5
Last December 1, all Radyo Bandera Sweet FM stations under 5K Broadcasting renamed as K5 News FM. It remains to be seen on whether 5K severed its ties with Bandera News. Not to be confused with its sister station K-Five, which rebranded as Klick FM last September.
8. The Return of Radyo Uno
Last May, DZME brough back its Radyo Uno branding. Not long after, its stations in Tandag and Bislig adopted the branding.
9. Radyo Sincero
Last August, Herbz Med Pharma Corporation took over the operations of Monster Radio stations in Zamboanga and General Santos, in which they were relaunched as Radyo Sincero.
10. Provincial Newbies
Heart FM Cagayan de Oro
On Valentine's Day, after almost a year off the air, 92.7 FM went back on air, this time as Heart FM. It is managed by the same team behind Heart FM 93.7 in Bukidnon.
Yuhum Radio
Last June, 5K Broadcasting, operator of K5 News FM and Klick FM, took over the operations of 99.1 FM in Bacolod. In August, it was launched as Yuhum Radio with a Top 40 format.
Bee FM Kidapawan
Last July, Bee 102.3, the first Top 40 station in Kidapawan, went on air. The station was formerly known as Radyo Tirada and part of Gold FM.
Radyo Lampornas
Last November, Mellow Touch 95.7 in Cagayan de Oro was taken over by new management and adopted a sub-brand Radyo Lampornas.
Special mentions to:
Philippine Broadcasting Service, which renamed as the Presidential Broadcast Service last February.
103.5, which retired the K-Lite branding at the beginning of this month. By Christmas Eve, it brought back the All Hits, All Lite tagline.
There may be some other events that I missed, but I'd rather not discuss any further.
