Former President Rodrigo Duterte has recently proposed a novel approach for Mindanao's secession from the Philippines, advocating for a signature-based initiative. During a press conference in Davao City, Duterte credited Davao Del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez for pioneering the concept of Mindanao's secession, emphasizing that the movement seeks lawful and nonviolent means, distancing itself from notions of rebellion or sedition.
Duterte outlined a procedural framework that involves accumulating verified signatures from Mindanao residents, a process he suggested could be recognized by international bodies such as the United Nations. He implied that if the people in Luzon and the Visayas continue their current stance, the decision rests in their hands, indicating a potential shift in the geopolitical landscape of the nation.
This stance comes amidst Duterte's consistent criticism of the ongoing signature campaign for a people's initiative aimed at amending the 1987 Constitution, a movement closely associated with President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. and Speaker Martin Romualdez. Both Marcos and Romualdez have been vocal advocates for revising the economic provisions of the Constitution, yet Duterte has expressed skepticism about the intentions behind the proposed Charter change (Cha-cha), suggesting it might serve to extend the tenure of certain individuals in power.
In highlighting the abundant resources of Mindanao, Duterte acknowledged the complexities that independence would entail, particularly concerning the influx and settlement of Filipinos within an autonomous Mindanao. He proposed a regulated approach during the formative years of independence while reassuring that individuals from Luzon and the Visayas would not be denied access.
Reflecting on the country's history and leadership, Duterte expressed a profound desire for a distinct path for Mindanao, voicing his disillusionment with the status quo and the succession of administrations that, in his view, have failed to bring about significant progress for the Philippines.
