Residents of Manila are increasingly anxious for their safety as a group of armed robbers on motorcycles prowls the city, targeting individuals withdrawing cash from ATMs. A recent report by GMA News "24 Oras" highlighted the case captured on CCTV in Barangay 719, Zone 78, where a man was cornered and robbed by six suspects on three motorcycles shortly after he withdrew money from an ATM on P. Ocampo St.
The suspects, reportedly armed, forcefully took P3,000 from the victim before fleeing towards Pasay City. This incident is not an isolated one. Prior to this, a woman was also reportedly targeted by the same group in the same area. Additionally, a foreigner was robbed of their cellphone by a motorcyclist in the early hours of the morning, adding to the string of crimes perpetrated by these mobile bandits.
Chairman of Barangay 719, Zone 78, Honorable Jaime Adriano, expressed grave concern over the situation, emphasizing the intimidating presence of the armed robbers. He highlighted the urgency of addressing this threat, given the group's organized and audacious nature, which overpowers the capacity of local security forces like barangay tanods.
According to Chairman Adriano, these crimes are not random but appear to be part of a systematic operation by the bandits, with Taft Avenue and Roxas Boulevard being among their hunting grounds.
In response to the escalating threat, Manila Police District Director Police Brigadier General Arnold Thomas Ibay has assured the public of the authorities' commitment to resolving the issue. He has instructed the Station 9 Commander (Malate Police Station) and the District Tactical Motorized Unit to collaborate closely with the affected barangays to enhance patrols and apprehend the culprits, ensuring the safety and security of Manila's residents.
