In Calasiao, Pangasinan, a massive snake believed to be a Burmese python, not a reticulated python as initially suspected, is causing concern among residents. This conclusion comes from an expert's analysis of the snake's shed skin found in the dense and wooded areas of Barangay Bued. The discovery has prompted the involvement of the City Environment & Natural Resources Office (CENRO)-Central Pangasinan in the investigation.
The fears of the local community were sparked upon finding the shed skin, suggesting the snake could be as long as 25 feet. The pattern on the shed skin led to the conclusion that the elusive snake might be a Burmese python, known for shedding its skin in one piece, unlike the reticulated python. Philip Matthew Licop from CENRO-Central Pangasinan noted the healthy condition of the shed skin, indicating that the snake might be a well-fed pet that has escaped.
Unlike reticulated pythons that tend to hide in the presence of humans, Burmese pythons are not known to fear human presence, raising additional concerns for the local population. Efforts to locate the snake are ongoing, with snake hunters exploring the bamboo-filled and riverine areas believed to be the snake's hiding spots.
Authorities are also urging local residents to report any unregistered pets, hinting at the possibility that the snake could be an escaped pet. The search has mobilized about 20 snake hunters, as informed by the local government, highlighting the community's concerted effort to address the situation.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has expressed concern over the disturbance to the natural habitat and potential impacts on the local ecosystem. During the search, four snakes have been captured so far, one of which measured 10 feet in length.
Local authorities have convened meetings with residents to provide information on what to do in case of snake bites and to raise awareness about the increased snake activity during this period, which coincides with their breeding season, potentially making them more aggressive.
