The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has mandated a thorough inspection of all terminals within the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) after videos depicting a rat and bed bugs circulating online sparked public concern. The unsettling footage, including one of a rat navigating the ceiling light fixtures at NAIA Terminal 3's Gate 102, was brought to attention by a passenger en route to Singapore on Friday.
In response to the incidents, MIAA General Manager Eric Ines has initiated an investigation, particularly focusing on areas highlighted in the complaints. Ines suspects that the presence of numerous food concessionaires within the airport might be attracting pests. To address this issue, a comprehensive review of NAIA's contracts with pest control services is underway, with Ines firmly stating that any deviation from the agreed terms would lead to revocation of contracts.
Despite the recent sightings, Ines reassures the public that the cleanliness of NAIA terminals is maintained rigorously, with cleaning operations conducted daily during non-peak hours, predominantly after midnight. He also encourages passengers to report any pest sightings to NAIA personnel, highlighting that response teams are stationed around the clock across all terminals to address such concerns swiftly.
As NAIA works to rectify these pest-related issues, the airport authority's proactive measures aim to ensure the safety and comfort of all travelers passing through its facilities.
