In a significant security operation at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), authorities seized an estimated P2 million worth of kush and cannabis oil cleverly concealed within 70 vape pens. This discovery occurred following a meticulous K-9 inspection of abandoned inbound parcels on April 26.
The parcels, which originated from the USA and Canada, were misleadingly declared as containing car seat covers, customized coffee mugs, and books. However, the real contents were far more illicit. The breakthrough came during an X-ray screening conducted by the Bureau of Customs, followed by a K-9 paneling and manual inspection by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group.
Police Captain Jennifer Batingal, spokesperson for the PNP Aviation Security Group, detailed the sequence of events leading to the interception of these five parcels. She highlighted the combined efforts of PDEA and customs officials in identifying and confirming the presence of illegal drugs.
Following this discovery, authorities are actively conducting follow-up operations to track down the intended recipients of these parcels. The seized narcotics are currently under analysis by the PDEA laboratory service in Quezon City, while NAIA's Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group is working to locate the consignees involved.
This operation is part of a broader crackdown on drug smuggling through the country's main gateway, which continues to challenge law enforcement agencies.
