GMA Network Inc. has once again secured the highest trust rating among major news brands in the Philippines for the fourth consecutive year. This was revealed in the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism's 2024 Digital News Report (DNR).
High Trust Ratings for GMA Network
The Kapuso network achieved a 72% brand trust rating, slightly down from 74% in 2023. The survey asked respondents to rate local news brands on a scale from 0 ("not at all trustworthy") to 10 ("completely trustworthy") based on their news output.
Following GMA Network were:
- TV5 with 67%
- Philippine Daily Inquirer with 66%
- Manila Bulletin, Super Radyo dzBB, and The Philippine Star each with 65%
- ABS-CBN and DZRH with 64%
- Local or regional newspapers and TeleRadyo with 60%
- Radyo Pilipinas with 59%
- State-run PTV with 58%
- SunStar with 53%
- Abante with 49%
- Rappler with 46%
The Reuters Institute noted that only these brands were included in the survey, and the results should not be viewed as exhaustive.
Overall Trust and News Consumption
The overall trust in news stood at 37%, described as "stable" by the Reuters Institute. Legacy brands maintained a relatively high level of trust, whereas some independent outlets faced distrust from supporters of certain politicians and harassment.
In terms of online reach, GMA News Online led with 45% weekly use, followed by:
- ABS-CBN News online with 40%
- Philippine Daily Inquirer online with 30%
- Rappler with 23%
- Philippine Star online, TV5 News online, and Yahoo! News each with 21%
For offline reach, covering television, radio, and print, GMA Network again recorded the highest weekly use at 47%, followed by:
- ABS-CBN with 40%
- Philippine Daily Inquirer with 27%
- TV5 with 23%
- Manila Bulletin with 22%
Digital and Social Media Dominance
The report highlighted that online and social media remain the most popular news sources in the Philippines. According to the study:
- 82% of Filipinos get their news from online platforms
- 63% from social media
- 46% from television
- 13% from print
The Digital News Report is based on a YouGov survey of individuals from 47 countries, conducted at the end of January or the beginning of February 2024. The Philippines had a sample size of 2,014 for the latest survey period.
