Teresa Loyzaga recently disclosed that she made the difficult decision to send her son, Diego Loyzaga, to a rehabilitation facility due to his struggles with drug use. The actress opened up about this personal and painful experience during Monday's episode of "Fast Talk With Boy Abunda."
A Mother's Tough Decision
Teresa revealed that she felt responsible for Diego's condition. "There was a part of me that died, but I wanted my son to live. So I had to put him in rehab," she shared. Initially, Diego was angry with his mother for her decision.
"He wasn't himself then. We have to understand that our loved ones who get into drugs are not themselves when they speak harshly or disrespectfully," Teresa explained.
Diego's Journey to Recovery
During Diego's eight-month rehabilitation, Teresa frequently visited him without his knowledge. "He didn't know I was visiting him. Even though we weren't allowed to see each other, I would watch him through a small monitor, send him food," she recounted.
Teresa vividly remembered a time when she could only see her son through a small hole in a tarpaulin. "There was a hole in the tarpaulin. They told me, 'you have to promise to be quiet, not to let him know you're there.' I promised, I just wanted to be close to him," she said.
Diego's Perspective
In a previous interview on "Fast Talk with Boy Abunda," Diego discussed how rehab changed his life. "I was very, very depressed. I was on the brink of being suicidal, and I won't deny that substances played a part in my mental state," Diego admitted.
He also shared the challenges he faced in rehab. "It affected me as an actor. I'm not usually someone who cries, but thinking back to my time in rehab, I do get emotional. It was so difficult," he confessed. "It was eight months until I saw the moon, eight months until I got to see the sun."
Moving Forward
Diego is Teresa's son with Cesar Montano and is a father to a baby girl, Hailey, who celebrated her first birthday in May. Diego's experience with rehab has been a transformative journey, helping him appreciate life and family more deeply.
