By Nidz Godino
"Harassment Philippines has faced is dangerous pure and simple… we all share interest in ensuring South China Sea remains open and free," US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin III said United States congratulated Philippines for "eloquently laying out Philippines' position on South China Sea (SCS)."
Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and Austin met on sidelines of 21st International Institute for Strategic Studies Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Saturday, to update each other on progress made by both countries since recent SQUAD meeting in Hawaii.
"SQUAD" is quadrilateral alliance among US, Japan, Australia and Philippines, had series of meetings in Hawaii with Austin last month. Four countries held marine military drills in April.
Austin opened discussion by congratulating President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for laying out Philippines' position on SCS.
Teodoro responded by expressing his "appreciation to US for supporting Marcos' thesis underscores rights of small states."
Austin reiterated the point he made during his talk on The New Convergence in Indo-Pacific on previous day.
"We are beyond friends and allies, we are family…what affects you affects us," he added.
