In a significant step toward enhancing disaster preparedness, the Muntinlupa City government is set to collaborate with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to install a continuous global positioning system (CGPS) aimed at measuring earthquakes. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve earthquake monitoring and response capabilities in the city.

The Muntinlupa City Council recently approved Resolution 2024-473, authorizing Mayor Ruffy Biazon to sign a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with PHIVOLCS. This agreement will facilitate the installation and maintenance of a CGPS unit at the Muntinlupa City Technical Institute (MCTI) located in Barangay Putatan.
Importance of the CGPS Installation The CGPS technology is essential for measuring geotectonic phenomena such as earthquakes. By continuously tracking the three-dimensional (3D) position of a point on or near the earth's surface, the system can monitor elevation changes that are crucial for understanding land subsidence and seismic activity.

According to the city council's resolution, the MCTI site is strategically ideal for hosting the CGPS receiver. The location offers a strategic vantage point and robust infrastructure, making it well-suited for supporting the new GPS network. This installation is expected to leverage existing data and significantly enhance the city's earthquake monitoring capabilities.
Enhancing Earthquake Prediction and Disaster Preparedness The implementation of the CGPS at MCTI will play a pivotal role in earthquake prediction and response. Continuous monitoring will enable PHIVOLCS to gather real-time data, which is fundamental for predicting seismic events and preparing timely responses. This, in turn, can lead to better disaster preparedness and potentially minimize the impact of natural disasters on the Muntinlupa community.
By partnering with PHIVOLCS to install a CGPS at MCTI, Muntinlupa City is taking proactive measures to safeguard its residents from the devastating effects of earthquakes. This initiative underscores the city's commitment to leveraging advanced technology for disaster risk reduction and enhancing community resilience.
