Elon Musk's vision for a multi-planetary humanity has taken an unusual turn. According to the New York Times, the SpaceX CEO has offered his own sperm to help seed a Martian colony. This proposal underscores Musk's deep commitment to establishing a human presence on Mars, despite the planet's harsh environment and the immense resources required for such an endeavor.
Musk, who often sports an "Occupy Mars" T-shirt, has long advocated for making Mars humanity's second home. His plans include using SpaceX's massive Starship to ferry resources across the 100 million-mile journey, leveraging Boring Company tunnels for infrastructure, and even utilizing rugged Tesla Cybertrucks for transportation on Mars' challenging terrain.
Despite the ambitious nature of these plans, insiders and experts, such as aerospace engineer Robert Zubrin, remain skeptical about the feasibility of colonizing Mars within Musk's projected timelines. However, Musk is undeterred, suggesting in a May tweet that landing people on Mars could happen in less than ten years, with a full city established in thirty years.
While SpaceX's focus currently includes fulfilling a multibillion-dollar NASA contract to reach the Moon first, the company's employees continue to develop plans for a Martian city, complete with communal living spaces and sustainable food sources.
