Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero criticized suspended Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo for questioning why senators focus on her instead of critical issues like food shortages and healthcare.
Escudero acknowledged Guo's right to express her views but stated she has no authority to dictate Senate priorities. He emphasized that her defense is understandable but she cannot impose her personal interests on lawmakers.
Escudero cited the legal principle that "flight is evidence of guilt" in response to Guo evading the Senate's arrest order. He noted that the Senate warrant was issued through a proper process.
Senator Risa Hontiveros also countered Guo's claim, stating they are not fixated on her but are "allergic to liars." Guo has been under investigation for alleged illegal activities in a raided POGO hub in Bamban.
Guo claimed her absence from Senate hearings was due to prioritizing her health and peace of mind. She denied involvement in threats against Senator Sherwin Gatchalian and denied holding a Chinese passport.
Escudero suggested that Guo might have left the Philippines using a Chinese passport, which would indicate negligence by the Bureau of Immigration. However, Guo's lawyer confirmed she is still in the country.
The ongoing Senate investigation has highlighted various government shortcomings, including issues with the Philippine Statistics Authority, Bureau of Immigration, and Department of Foreign Affairs.
