The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is conducting a search operation for a missing Filipino fisherman after an unidentified vessel collided with a fishing boat in the waters off Subic, Zambales. The incident occurred on July 3, when brothers Robert and Jose Mondoñedo were traveling to their payao—a floating device used to attract fish—near Sampaloc Point.
According to the PCG, the brothers' boat, FBCA John Robert, was struck around 3 p.m., causing it to sink. The PCG describes this incident as an allision, which involves a moving vessel hitting a stationary one.
"47-year-old Robert Mondoñedo survived the incident, but his brother, Jose Mondoñedo, remains missing," stated PCG spokesperson Rear Admiral Armando Balilo. Robert clung to the payao for three days until he was rescued by another fishing boat on the morning of July 6.
The PCG has issued a notice to mariners and local fishermen to aid in the search for Jose. The Coast Guard Station in Zambales is investigating the incident and gathering further information to take appropriate measures, as directed by CG Admiral Gavan.
