The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) reported on Thursday that power outages continue to affect just under 400,000 customers in areas impacted by Super Typhoon Carina and the enhanced Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).
In an interview with Super Radyo dzBB, Meralco spokesperson Joe Zaldarriaga explained that electricity for approximately 324,000 customers was "deliberately disconnected due to severe flooding" in the following areas:
- Bulacan
- Valenzuela
- Mandaluyong
- Marikina
- Pasay
- Quezon City
- Rizal
Additionally, around 68,000 customers remain without power due to various issues such as tripped power lines or obstructions like foreign objects on the transmission lines.
Zaldarriaga assured that power will be restored in affected areas "once it is safe." He emphasized the priority on safety before restoring electricity services. "Kailangan muna siguraduhin ang safety bago ibalik ang serbisyo ng kuryente (We have to ensure safety before restoring electricity services)," he said.
He also noted that the restoration process is not immediate even if the flooding subsides. "Hind 'yan instant (It's not instant)," Zaldarriaga added. "But rest assured, babalik kapag safe na."
State of Calamity and Continued Impact
The Metro Manila Council (MMC) declared a state of calamity in the National Capital Region due to the extensive flooding caused by Habagat and Typhoon Carina.
While Typhoon Carina has exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility, PAGASA indicated that it will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon, bringing moderate to intense rains over the western section of Luzon.
