Anjo Pertierra, a resident of Marikina and Kapuso broadcaster, recounted his harrowing experience of being evacuated from his flooded home due to Super Typhoon Carina.
Speaking on "Unang Hirit" Thursday, Anjo detailed how the floodwaters quickly inundated his basement room, making it impossible to open the door due to the water pressure. His videos revealed the severity of the flooding inside his home.
"The flood reached my chest," said Anjo, who stands 6'2". "For the average Filipino, it was up to their necks or ears."
Despite his efforts, Anjo was unable to save any belongings. "Wala 'kong nasalbang gamit," he said. "The only thing I managed to grab were four t-shirts because the water rose so quickly."
Authorities rescued Anjo and other families using a paddle boat as his car was also submerged.
Back on "Unang Hirit" Thursday, Anjo wore a shirt provided by the morning show's stylist, since he had lost everything in the flood. He continued to provide weather updates and report on the Marikina River's current situation, which had exceeded its limit, causing widespread flooding and forcing evacuations.
Metro Manila Under State of Calamity
Metro Manila was declared under a state of calamity on Wednesday due to severe flooding. Many malls and establishments offered shelter, parking spaces, bathrooms, and internet access to affected residents.
Although Typhoon Carina has exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility as of Thursday morning, PAGASA weather specialist Veronica Torres warned that it would continue to enhance the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), bringing moderate to intense rains over the western section of Luzon.
Several organizations, including GMA Kapuso Foundation, have launched donation drives to assist those affected by the super typhoon.
