The Regional Trial Court in the National Capital Region (NCR) has issued a new arrest warrant for Carlwyn Baldo, the mayor of Daraga, Albay, in connection with the 2018 murders of Ako Bicol Representative Rodel Batocabe and his police aide, Master Sergeant Orlando Diaz.
The court issued the warrant for two counts of murder against Baldo, with no bail recommended.
Baldo is allegedly involved in the fatal shooting of Batocabe and Diaz, which occurred during a gift-giving event in Daraga. Police attempted to arrest Baldo at his residence, but he was not present.
In 2019, Baldo publicly denied any involvement in the crime during a media interview, stating, "I am innocent of any accusations against me. I did not order the killing of Congressman Batocabe and SPO2 Orlando Diaz."
Though an initial arrest warrant was issued, Baldo was temporarily released after being granted bail.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) assured the public that security and order in Daraga would be maintained amid the developments. PBGEN Andre Dizon, the Regional Director, urged Baldo to surrender and face the charges against him, stating, "He should surrender, face the case, and defend himself. It's difficult to live in hiding."
The Batocabe family expressed relief over the court's decision, hoping for justice soon. "We're very happy with the decision and we're thankful to RTC Manila for finally issuing a warrant of arrest," said Atty. Justin Batocabe, the son of the late Representative Rodel Batocabe.
