EJ Obiena, the Philippines' top pole vaulter and Asia's best, is set to organize a prestigious pole vault competition in the Philippines on September 20, featuring finalists from the 2024 Paris Olympics. The event, registered with World Athletics, will take place at the Ayala Triangle Gardens, using outdoor surfaces that meet international standards.
Obiena, who finished fourth in the pole vault finals in Paris, shared his excitement about the upcoming event. "I'm trying to host a competition to bring these guys that I competed against here today. It's already in the calendar, it's on September 20," he said.
Athletes expected to join include Greece's Emmanouil Karalis, who won bronze in Paris, and China's Huang Bokai, who trains under Obiena's coach, Vitaly Petrov. Obiena also hopes to invite Germany's Oleg Zernikel and world record holder and gold medalist, Mondo Duplantis.
"I hope Oleg will come, I think Emmanouil will come, Bokai will come. So we'll see. I will try to get the Olympic finalists and have a really good competition in the Philippines," Obiena added. "I think the country deserves that."
To ensure the event meets World Athletics standards, Obiena has enlisted the help of a European consultant experienced in organizing such events. "The surface that we'll be using is the same surface here in Paris and Tokyo. Hopefully, you guys will have a world-class competition in the Philippines," he said.
