The Department of Education (DepEd) reported that over 3.5 million students were affected by the suspension of face-to-face classes in parts of Metro Manila, Calabarzon, and Mimaropa due to the volcanic smog (vog) from Taal Volcano.
According to DepEd, a total of 3,586,353 students and 112,791 school personnel across 2,967 schools were impacted by the class suspensions. The majority of the affected learners, over 2.8 million, are from Calabarzon, followed by 730,336 students in the National Capital Region (NCR), and 5,922 in Mimaropa.
Some schools that had suspended in-person classes since August 19 have already resumed, while others, especially in Calabarzon, are still assessing when it will be safe to return to classrooms.
DepEd had earlier authorized schools in NCR and Calabarzon to suspend face-to-face classes due to the health risks posed by the vog. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has since reported that the vog in Taal Volcano has dissipated as of Wednesday.
