Former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis "Chavit" Singson has officially announced his candidacy for the Senate in the 2025 midterm elections. The announcement comes after receiving an endorsement from former President Rodrigo Duterte, which Singson said played a significant role in his decision to run.
"It's an honor to be endorsed by [former] President Rodrigo 'Digong' Duterte. I'm very thankful that he didn't forget. After thinking it over and discussing it with my family, I'm now confirming for the first time that I will run for senator with your support," Singson stated in a Facebook post.
Singson had previously expressed interest in a Senate seat back in 2007, which he described as a "fight" against the family of his former ally, then-President Joseph Estrada, though he was unsuccessful in that attempt.
In 2021, Singson joined the Nationalist People's Coalition while serving as the mayor of Narvacan, Ilocos Sur. However, he did not seek any public office in the 2022 national elections. Duterte has expressed his support for Singson's Senate bid, should he decide to pursue it in the upcoming elections.
