Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos addressed the controversy surrounding a viral photo of him and Philippine National Police chief General Rommel Marbil with dismissed Bamban, Tarlac mayor Alice Guo. The image, taken during their trip to Indonesia, drew criticism online, with many questioning the appropriateness of the photo, given Guo's legal issues.
Abalos explained that the photo, which shows Guo sitting candidly between the two officials, was meant for documentation purposes. Guo, who faces human trafficking and money laundering charges in the Philippines, had requested to speak with them regarding death threats she had received. Abalos assured her that the authorities would focus on the truth, stating, "Ang importante sabihin niya ang totoo, lahat."
He added that he was unaware of Guo's pose during the photo, emphasizing that his attention was focused on the camera.
The photo sparked backlash from lawmakers, with Senator Joel Villanueva criticizing the officials for taking pictures with Guo, calling it "unprofessional." Senator Risa Hontiveros also voiced her disapproval, reminding officials that Guo is a fugitive, not a celebrity, and should be treated accordingly.
Guo, who was handed over by Indonesian authorities, faces multiple charges, including human trafficking, money laundering, and a deportation case.
