The University of the Philippines (UP) will be signing a Deed of Transfer for the site of the Freedom Memorial Museum on September 27, 2024, Friday, 9:30 a.m., at the Quezon Hall steps, UP Diliman, Quezon City.
The ceremony will be attended by representatives of the UP System administration, led by President Angelo Jimenez and UP Diliman Chancellor Edgardo Carlo Vistan; the Human Rights Violation Victims' Memorial Commission (HRVVMC), represented by Executive Director Chuck Crisanto; the Commission on Human Rights; and representatives from various Martial Law victims groups and their families.
The ceremony will mark the official turnover of the location for the museum, enabling the clearing of the area, as well as the construction of the building itself. The memorial will honor the 11,103 victims of Martial Law, which include some members of the UP community.
Martial Law was declared by Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos on September 21, 1972 under Proclamation No. 1081. It was announced in public on the evening of September 23. The country was placed under martial rule until 1981.
UP's commitment to construction of the museum can be traced back to the holding of its first Day of Remembrance in 2018, where the university sat aside September 21 as a day as a day for commemoration,
