Lea Salonga has expressed that while she appreciates calls for her to be named a National Artist, she believes the late comedian Dolphy is more deserving of the title. Speaking at the 2024 CCP Gawad Para sa Sining awards ceremony, Salonga said Dolphy's recognition is "long overdue" given his significant contributions to Philippine entertainment.
Salonga highlighted Dolphy's influential roles, particularly his portrayals of gay characters in films like Fefita Fofonggay viuda de Falayfay (1973), Ang Tatay Kong Nanay (1978), and Markova: Comfort Gay (2001). She noted how these roles, though not intended at the time, promoted tolerance and acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ community.
The Miss Saigon star shared her hope to one day campaign for Dolphy's recognition as a National Artist, emphasizing his immense body of work.
Salonga, who recently received the CCP Gawad Para sa Sining award and unveiled her wax figure in Singapore, has a busy end to 2024. She will release a new album in November and perform in Stage, Screen and Everything In Between.
