Miya Cech has officially been cast as Toph Beifong, the iconic earthbending master, in Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The announcement was made as production for the second season kicks off.
Cech, a Japanese-Chinese-American actress and long-time fan of the original animated series, expressed her excitement about the role. In an interview, she revealed that she auditioned using "dummy sides with different names and storylines" but knew she was testing for Toph. After multiple auditions and a chemistry read with co-star Gordon Cormier (Aang), she secured the role.
Sharing the news on Instagram, Cech wrote, "I've spent the past 5 years hoping for just the opportunity to audition for the role of Toph… I. Am. Melon. Lord."
Toph, a blind earthbending master, famously discovers metalbending and plays a key role in teaching Aang how to earthbend in the original series. Filming for the adaptation's second and third seasons is already underway, with premiere dates yet to be announced.
The series also stars Filipino-Canadian Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Dallas Liu as Zuko, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh, and Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai.
