Emergency services officials in Japan say nine people were injured in a stabbing spree on a commuter train in Tokyo on Friday night.
The 36-year-old male suspect fled the scene but was later taken in by police.
The Tokyo Fire Department and police say the injured people are conscious. They say one woman in her 20s sustained serious injuries to her back and elsewhere.
The suspect started wielding a knife around 8:30 p.m. on a train operated by Odakyu Electric Railway. It was near Seijogakuenmae station in Setagaya Ward.
The railway operator says it was alerted and brought the train to an emergency stop.
Investigators say the suspect jumped onto the tracks and fled. They say a knife that is believed to have been used in the stabbings, and a mobile phone believed to belong to the suspect, were found on the train.
The suspect reportedly turned himself in at a convenience store in neighboring Suginami Ward about five kilometers away.
He reportedly told the manager that he is the perpetrator of an incident being reported in the news, and that he is tired of running away. A witness says there was blood on his body.
A company worker in his 20s who was on the train at the time of the incident says people were suddenly running toward him, screaming.
He says passengers were fleeing from one car to another, adding that he was jostled by the crowd and found himself standing next to a bleeding person.
Two women say they were suddenly told to run away. One of them says they fled to the next car, and then to another.
She added that they and many others around them were checking their smartphones for information. She said they learned about what happened via Twitter.
After the incident, railway staff escorted the passengers along the tracks to a nearby station.
