One of my motivations when I entered the seminary is that I may fill the emptiness in my heart. However, I realized that priesthood, is not a bed of roses and an experience of comfort and convenience. Discipleship entails sacrifice and self-giving. The world says that our happiness can be found in temporal things. Jesus teaches us that we must not aim for worldly things if we are to truly live as his disciples. Rather, we need to actively seek for and embrace their opposites: meekness, poverty, kindness, humility, suffering, and persecution.
Today's Gospel teaches us that in order to find everlasting joy, we must translate the Beatitudes into our own attitudes. A positive attitude ushers us to experience joy, especially when we see everything as God's gift. Everything we have is a result of the boundless graciousness of God. May we become happy by being grateful and in realizing how blessed we are.
