Senator Risa Hontiveros has issued a strong warning against fake photos circulating online that falsely depict her as a friend of dismissed Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo. The senator took to social media on Friday to clarify that the images, which suggest a close association between her and Guo, are edited and entirely fabricated.
"Wala akong kaibigan na pekeng Pil. Mag-ingat po sa mga edited photos online na magkasama kami diumano at magkaibigan daw kami. THIS IS FAKE," Hontiveros stated, urging the public to be cautious about manipulated images. She also called on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok to take stronger measures in moderating AI-generated content.
The issue arose amid ongoing investigations into Guo, who has been linked to an illegal POGO (Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator) hub in Bamban, Tarlac. Guo's identity and citizenship have been subjects of scrutiny, and her name was placed on an immigration lookout bulletin following revelations about her involvement in illegal activities.
Hontiveros, who first disclosed Guo's escape from the country in July, is set to lead the Senate's investigation into the matter. Despite the controversy, Guo remains in Indonesia, according to Philippine authorities.
In light of the incident, netizen Ryan Lingo, who initially shared the fake photos, publicly apologized to Hontiveros, acknowledging his mistake and pledging to be more responsible with his online posts.
