Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos announced on Monday that additional complaints may be filed against individuals who obstructed the arrest of Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) leader Pastor Apollo Quiboloy. Authorities discovered that Quiboloy had been hiding inside the KOJC compound in Davao City prior to his arrest.
"This is my warning. After everything that happened, I'm sure someone should be guilty of obstruction of justice for harboring and hiding someone who is wanted," Abalos said in a press conference. He added that there had been deception and interference during the arrest attempt, witnessed by the public and General Nicolas Torre III.
The Davao Regional Police Office (PRO 11) confirmed that 29 KOJC members are already facing obstruction of justice and direct assault complaints after 60 police officers were injured during the implementation of the arrest warrants.
Quiboloy surrendered to the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (ISAFP) on Sunday after the Philippine National Police (PNP) gave him a 24-hour ultimatum to surrender or face a forced entry into a building at the KOJC compound.
KOJC legal counsel Atty. Israelito Torreon explained that Quiboloy decided to surrender to prevent further "lawless violence" in the KOJC compound, citing the suffering of his followers.
Quiboloy and several others face charges related to violations of the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act, as well as qualified human trafficking. He is also indicted in the U.S. on charges of sex trafficking, conspiracy, and bulk cash smuggling, all of which his camp has denied.
